Dr Ajay Thakorlal
Radiologist
Dr Ajay Thakorlal graduated in medicine in 1996 from The University of Sydney. He completed his radiology training and was admitted as a fellow of The Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Radiologists in 2009. Dr Ajay Thakorlal moved to Newcastle in 2004 and completed his training at the John Hunter Hospital before travelling to Ireland for a specialist fellowship in Interventional Radiology. His interests lie in general radiology, with particular focus in interventional radiological procedures. He is also currently working at the John Hunter Hospital as a staff specialist radiologist.
Dr Shane Fernando
Radiologist & Nuclear Medicine Specialist
Dr Shane grew up in a small country town in the NSW Central Western Plains before travelling to Tamworth for High School. Here, he excelled academically and in leadership, captaining the School in Year 12 as well as the school Cricket and Football teams for many years. Shane made the move to Newcastle at the cessation of school to commence his Bachelor of Medicine, training through the University of Newcastle and John Hunter Hospital. In 2011, Shane completed his Radiology training and went on to obtain a sub-specialty interest in Interventional Radiology. He continued his study beyond Radiology, completing a second Medical Specialty in Nuclear Medicine and is now one of the few Dual Trained Radiology – Nuclear Medicine Fellows in Australia.
Shane is a proud Indigenous Australian and is the first and only Indigenous Radiologist and Nuclear Medicine Specialist.
Shane has lived in the local Lake Macquarie area for most of his adult life, raising his 3 children here and is proud to call this community home. Coming from a small country town, Shane is passionate about the importance of community and providing access to affordable and quality healthcare for all. As the Managing Director of In Focus Radiology, Shane strives to ensure the Newcastle and Lake Macquarie has access to Bulk-Billed Radiology services including a range of interventional procedures, which are his specialty. Shane’s vision in the future is to expand upon the services offered by In Focus to include a Nuclear Medicine and MRI service.
Dr Tom Macdougall
Radiologist
Tom Macdougall studied medicine at University College London where he also obtained a PhD before training in radiology at Charing Cross and Hammersmith Hospitals in London. He gained the Rohan Williams Medal graduating top in the FRCR exams. Following this, he came to Australia to complete a fellowship in paediatric radiology at Westmead Children’s Hospital. He settled in the Hunter Valley in 2007, and maintains an active interest in paediatric radiology, being Director of Paediatric Radiology at John Hunter Hospital, until 2024. He also has an interest in MRI, abdominal imaging, women’s imaging and musculoskeletal ultrasound.
