Bone Density Scans

At the time of booking your scan, please inform booking staff or the radiographer of any recent imaging appointments involving barium, the injection of contrast material for a CT scan or a radioisotope injection.

At the time of booking your appointment you may be asked further questions about your healthcare status. This is due to Medicare having strict guidelines for performing bone densitometry examinations. In some cases this may result in a cost to you, however, we will inform you of this before you have your examination. Please also inform the staff when booking if you have had this test performed previously within the last 2 years.

No specific preparation is necessary for this test. Loose comfortable clothing is suggested, avoiding zippers, buckles and metal buttons if possible. We suggest not taking calcium tablets 24 hours prior to the Bone Densitometry examination.

Please bring any previous films with you for comparison.

It is important that you make an appointment to return to your doctor after your visit with us. Whether they are normal or abnormal, your doctor needs to correlate your results with other information for further management.

Depending on your referrer’s preference(s), a copy of the report and images will be sent directly to your referring doctor within 24 hours. You will also be given electronic access for your own records.

In urgent circumstances, our specialist will speak with your doctor directly by telephone the same day of your examination. Digital copies of all studies are stored on our secured database for comparison with any future examinations.
